Understanding the Signs of Growth on Your Healing Journey

Healing is rarely a straight path. It often feels like a series of small steps forward, occasional setbacks, and moments of clarity. Recognizing what growth looks like during this process can help you stay motivated and appreciate your progress, even when it feels slow or invisible.

Recognizing Emotional Shifts

One of the clearest signs of growth is a change in how you handle emotions. Early in healing, feelings like anger, sadness, or anxiety might feel overwhelming or constant. As you grow, you may notice:

  • Increased emotional awareness: You start to recognize your feelings without being consumed by them.

  • Better emotional regulation: You can pause before reacting and choose healthier responses.

  • More moments of peace: Even if challenges remain, you find calm in situations that once triggered distress.

For example, someone recovering from grief might find that memories no longer bring sharp pain but instead a bittersweet comfort. This shift shows healing progress.

Building Healthier Relationships

Growth often shows up in how you connect with others. Healing can help you:

  • Set clearer boundaries to protect your well-being.

  • Communicate your needs more openly and honestly.

  • Choose relationships that support your growth instead of draining you.

If you notice you’re spending less time with toxic people or feeling more comfortable saying no, these are strong signs of progress. Not feeling guilty about releasing people that no longer serve your highest good.

Developing New Coping Skills

Healing involves learning new ways to manage stress and challenges. Growth means you are:

  • Trying new self-care practices like mindfulness, journaling, or exercise.

  • Seeking support when needed, such as therapy or support groups.

  • Replacing harmful habits with healthier alternatives.

For instance, someone who once turned to avoidance might now face difficult emotions directly, using breathing exercises to stay grounded.

Noticing Changes in Self-Perception

Healing changes how you see yourself. Growth can include:

  • Increased self-compassion and kindness.

  • Letting go of harsh self-judgment.

  • Feeling more confident in your worth and abilities.

  • Opening talk with people you trust about your healing journey.

You might catch yourself thinking, “I’m doing the best I can,” instead of “I’m not enough.” This shift is a powerful indicator of healing.

Celebrating Small Wins

Growth on a healing journey often comes in small, quiet moments. These might be:

  • Getting through a tough day without falling into old patterns.

  • Trying something new that scares you.

  • Feeling hopeful about the future.

  • Being able to smile more.

  • Noticing the bright colors around you.

Each small win builds momentum and reminds you that healing is happening, even if it’s not always visible. Stop comparing your journey to other people you admire because they seem like they have it all together. Allowing their story to motivate you or inspire you is a better way to help you along your journey. We all compare ourselves to others in hope to motivate us to do better, in reality we are basing our small wins to there already bigger wins. You will meet people that will resonate with you and where you are at, people that have moved past where you are at and than people that haven't gotten as far as you. We are all in this journey of life together if we allow ourselves to motivate, inspire and encourage each other.

You are doing great! Keep the momentum going and you will eventually push through anything you put your mind too. I believe in you!
